Why I believe that ‘Different is Beautiful.’

To be worthy ancestors and leaders, we can’t afford to keep ‘doing the wrong thing righter’ (as described by the distinguished systems theorist, Russ Ackoff).

Scientific evidence shows that human actions since the Industrial Revolution have become the main driver of global environmental change. We find ourselves trapped in vast global economic systems that are corrupt and drive systemic inequality. Many ‘modern’ organisations have stripped the satisfaction out of work and dehumanised people. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mental illness – depression, anxiety, panic attacks, stress – are on the rise worldwide.

The innovations underpinning this crisis have been driven by profitability rather than human need.

But all is not lost. There’s a growing movement of people and organisations innovating differently –  by considering human needs and human relationships, and the ethical response of stewardship to the environment. To me, this different approach to innovating is beautiful.

My Mission

Since 2009 I’ve been pursuing the gold standard for building a better world by helping organisations become great places to innovate – for all.

My Experience

Over the past decade, I’ve been lucky enough to head up the award-winning First National Bank Innovators programme when SA’s best digital bank was named the world’s most innovative bank.

I’m also grateful to have led corporate venture building within Africa’s largest lender, Standard Bank. SnapScan (mobile payment solution app), Shyft (forex app), Edge (banking for entrepreneurs) and Feenix (crowdfunding for students) are some of the internal startups my team and I incubated within the Personal, Business and Commercial Banking division.

At the macro level, I’m serving our country’s Parliament for a second term as a member of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI).

To help build the innovation ecosystem, I co-founded The Creative Leadership Collective (CLC) in 2017. CLC is a peer-to-peer network of innovation leaders from across the private, public, not-for-profit and startup sectors.

My Training & Qualifications

My qualifications include an Executive MBA from Henley Business School Africa (2011) and Honours in Organisational Psychology from Rhodes University (1996). I’ve completed the SingularityU South Africa Executive Programme (2019), the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design Thinking – Fast Forward in Design Thinking (2017) and the Music & Creative Industries Module (Henley Business School Africa) (2015).

On the training and coaching front, I’ve been blessed to work with some of the world’s leading innovation thinkers and practitioners, including Professor Henry Chesbrough (the father of open innovation), Dr Tendayi Viki (Author – The Corporate Startup, Associate Partner at Strategyzer) and  Stanford University’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship faculty.

My Why

Helping people rediscover and express their inherent creativity.

My What

Workshops, bootcamps, training, coaching, change management to help imagine, incubate and accelerate human-centred innovations.

My What

  • Relationships first
  • Grit
  • Kaizen
