As Nadine Mayers (Bcom LLB MBA PhD), Course Convenor: UCT GSB Executive Education said,

“Paul brings a very real and practical application of how innovation really works when the rubber hits the road.”

Keynote:

Are We Innovative Yet?

Since 2010, Paul Steenkamp has pursued one main goal: refining the gold standard of what it takes for modern leaders to innovate for an inclusive and sustainable future – while running their core business more effectively.

This keynote is the distillation of what he’s learned so far.

Paul will take you through why there’s a need to challenge conventional approaches to innovation and why Africa is the most exciting place in the world to innovate. He’ll also share the journey he’s been on designing and leading innovation programmes within large, complex, regulated organisations.

In other words, get the insights from the mistakes he’s made and the lessons he’s learned.

And, because he believes that inviting every employee into the innovation process is necessary if an organisation wants to operate with greater agility and radically accelerate organisational performance, Paul also shares a flight plan for systemically empowering the often-overlooked and under-employed majority of employees. Find the ‘unsung heroes’ that can lead the transformation of your company through improved innovation outcomes.

Keynote:

Making Mojo – The Untold South African Innovation Success Stories

This is a keynote in four parts looking at how radical problem solving is transforming legacy South African organisations into agile ones, and local disruptive startups into hyper growth rockets.

Introduction: Why We Need to Think Differently & Do Differently

Paul takes his lead from distinguished systems theorist Russ Ackoff, who called on society to stop ‘doing the wrong thing righter’, and challenges us to be worthy ancestors and leaders. To illustrate his meaning, Paul introduces six South African organisations that are innovating differently by considering human needs and human relationships, as well as the ethical responsibilities of stewardship to the environment and economy.

Act 1: What to Do, Where to Start – Thinking Big

Paul explains how we can ‘Think Big’ – by tricking our brains and organisational cultures into new ways of taking stock, re-imagining and aligning around opportunities that require radical problem-solving. Using examples drawn from his Big 6, he shows how Thinking Big can drive inclusive and sustainable growth.

Act 2: What to Do Next – Start Small

Paul talks about the value of establishing a common language and framework that encourages and empowers every employee to ‘bring their brain to work’.

He talks through his experience in establishing in-house ‘Offices of Radical Problem-Solving’ here in South Africa. These examples outline the workings of an employee innovation programme on steroids – designed to evolve their ideas into human-centred design experiments while generating data to inform ongoing and balanced innovation investment decisions.

Act 3: Move Fast

Paul unpacks the role of executives in managing the critical success factors that help internal innovators escape the constraints of their organisation – to de-scale bureaucracy and level-up organisational agility.

Paul includes case studies of how some of the local companies listed above are moving away from ‘waterfall’ change management activities in favour of safe radical problem-solving sandboxes. These sandboxes create the space for your talent to identify and remove unnecessary obstacles. By doing so, they can execute at the speed of a startup.
