Think Big – Strategy Design

Zinzi Mgolodela, Director: Corporate Affairs, Woolworths SA

Our work involved helping Zinzi and her team to Think Big by:

  • Ensuring that customer and constituent pains remain top of mind
  • Setting the bar high for the impact their inclusive growth projects aim to achieve
  • Stretching beyond the assumptions, biases, and orthodoxies that define the status quo
  • Leaning into the experience, knowledge, insight, and wisdom of colleagues and collaborators to expand on opportunities and inspire bolder Corporate Affairs solutions

Start Small – Validation Sprint

Evelien Griffioen, Head of Customer Insights, Yoco

When it came to validating a potential internal startup, our partnership with Yoco involved Moving Fast by:

  • Developing and testing a portfolio of business model hypotheses
  • Taking inventory of compelling desirability, feasibility, and viability questions
  • Designing initial business, product, and service scenarios

Move Fast – Lean and Human-Centred Change Management

Johannes Wedenig, Senior Innovation Manager, UNICEF ESARO

Our work involved helping Johannes and his team embed human-centred design via a new organisational structure. We delivered coaching for agile task teams, as well as a feedback-driven change management inspired by combining the best ideas from Agile, Lean Startup, Change Management and Design Thinking.

Think Big – Visioning Blitz

The board of the Restitution Foundation came together to consider how they might prepare the organisation for the future, reaffirming those legacy elements that serve and rethinking those that don’t. They emerged from this one-day blitz held in Betty’s Bay on the Overberg coast with a human-centred Vision Statement, but also a vibrant pot of insights about the leadership, ways of working, alignment, funding and public interfacing required to realise the following:

“Our 2023 dream is to mobilise youth and business towards a Restitution Movement for a just and hopeful society.”

Restitution Foundation Board, January 2020

Think Big – Synthesis and Ideation Blitz

Fondation Botnar is partnering with UNICEF to help leverage digital innovation for the social sectors in Africa, by the marginalised youth in Africa.

The first phase (Designing with Young People) consisted of empathy and ‘understanding’ engagements. These fieldwork engagements took place within Tanzania, South Africa, Nigeria, Malawi and Kenya. These design streams were converged and ideated upon at this Point of View (POV) Synthesis and Ideation Blitz, held over three days in the Cape Town city centre. The collective wisdom of the participants culminated in a portfolio of prioritised moonshots. These now serve as the critical inputs for Phase Two: Prototyping, currently underway.

Start Small – Accelerating Speed to Pilot Blitz

A group of collaborators from strategically aligned organisations convened in Athlone on the Cape Flats to explore how their core strengths could be applied to pilot a moonshot in support of the African Youth Digital Innovation Instrument.

They emerged from this two-day blitz with the initial business, product, and service scenarios, as well as clarity and accountability regarding next steps. The participating organisations included Zaio + World Scouts + University of Salzburg + UNICEF + Umuzi + Segal Foundation + Strathmore University (Kenya) + RLabs + Federal University of Pernambuco (Brazil) + Didx + Dalberg + Cartedo + Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (Austria).
